In 1998, I had some free time and I traveled to Guatemala and began buying textiles from the indigenous people in the hills up around Momostenango. I have long been very interested in Latin America’s history, culture and politic for a long time, really liked Guatemala and I decided to attempt to monetize my interest. Later that year, I opened a retail store in Calabasas, California selling indigenous textiles and handicrafts. It was more of a labor of love than a moneymaker and my partner and I closed it within the year, but I did pay careful attention to the enormous sales generated by the nutritional store next door which would influence my decision to later start Power Nutrition in Bangkok. I returned to Guatemala the following year to show around some friends who were South African and Czech politicians who were attending the Truth & Reconciliation event in Guatemala City that was sponsored by Harvard University and the State Department.
